Energy for Health

                  Reiki

Reiki is a wonderful system of healing which promotes deep relaxation, reduces the negative effects of stress and facilitiates healing. It is a method of rebalancing the natural flow of energy within the body.  It is a method of rebalancing the natural flow of energy within the body so as to allow it to heal itself.

The easiest way to gain an understanding of what Reiki is though, is to experience receiving it. A significant aspect is that it is the receiver who determines and directs the flow of energy that is passed to them. This is subconscious, operating at the most fundamental levels. It is the recipient’s body which conducts the energy and directs it according to where it is needed the most. The practitioner simply acts as a conduit or channel for the Reiki energy to flow through.

The name Reiki means Universal Life-Force, with the ‘ki’ having the same basic meaning as the Chinese ‘chi’ and the Sanskrit ‘prana’.

The History of Reiki

Pronounced ray-key, this method of touch healing was re-discovered by Dr Mikao Usui during the last half of the 1800’s. It’s origins, some say, even pre-date the references found to it in ancient Sanscrit and Tibetian texts over 2000 years old. In this century it has travelled from Japan, via Hawaii to the United States. From there in the last few decades it has been passed to many thousands if not millions of people worldwide.

Since Reiki is not a religion it is easily accepted whatever an individual’s beliefs.

Reiki treatment sessions last approximately one hour and involve the recipient lying, fully clothed and covered with a blanket, on a couch. Light touch is applied from head to toe in various points over the body. Generally people describe the experience as 'calming', 'comforting', 'warmth', 'relaxing', 'peaceful'. My own opinion is that one of the things Reiki does is to encourage the brain frequencies to slow down to Delta or Theta levels which are the levels where the body can work on repairing itself.

Reiki may also be an appropriate medium for the realisation of personal spiritual growth and a faciilitator for the growth of consciousness.

Learning Reiki

In order for the practitioner to be able to give Reiki they will have been through a process (called
attunements) which opens up their inherent healing ability. These attunements are given by the Reiki Master/Teacher.

Usui Reiki is divided into three degrees. 1st Degree is primarily for self-healing, although Reiki can be given directly to others as well. In the months following attunement there is often an improvement in the physical health of the person who has been attuned.

At 2nd Degree, which noticeably increases the flow of Reiki energy, keys are given which allow distance healing and more conscious use of Reiki energies for specific purposes. With the 3rd Degree the flow of energy is further enhanced and the practitioner has the option of becoming a Master/Teacher themselves. .

It is important to realise that anyone can be attuned to Reiki giving them access to this energy for self use and for family and friends

For those working in the healthcare field, having access to the Reiki energy is a distinct benefit as an adjunct to and enhancing their existing skills.
